Fields of Mistria Lag, Stuttering & FPS Fix Guide
When Fields of Mistria lags, stutters or drops frames, record your game version, platform, resolution and whether mods are installed. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what actually helped.
Official step: update drivers first
The v1.0.2 patch notes ask players to "make sure you update your graphics card drivers and your computer as a first step" when performance is poor.
Overlay conflicts (fixed in 1.0.2)
1.0.2 improved performance when third-party overlays (AMD, Nvidia) draw in the same window as the game. If problems persist, disable Steam, Discord, Nvidia and AMD overlays one at a time.
Known issue: integrated GPUs
The v0.16.5 "New Engine" notes list ongoing "graphical and performance issues... particularly on AMD and Intel integrated GPUs". Optimizations are still in progress.
Start with the basics
Close high-usage background apps, restart the game, and confirm no pending OS or driver updates are waiting for a reboot. On Steam, run "Verify integrity of game files" before anything else.
Update GPU drivers and your OS
Use your GPU vendor’s tool (NVIDIA app/GeForce Experience, AMD Adrenalin, Intel Driver & Support Assistant) to install the latest stable driver, then apply system updates. This is the developers’ official first step.
Disable overlays and capture software
The Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Nvidia ShadowPlay and AMD Radeon Overlay can all hurt frame pacing. Turn them off one at a time and retest after each.
Lower load one setting at a time
Try reducing resolution, shadows and effects, switching between fullscreen and windowed modes, and capping the frame rate. Disable VSync if input feels delayed. Record the result after each change.
Windows specifics
Set the Windows power mode to "Best performance". On a laptop with hybrid graphics, force Fields of Mistria onto the dedicated GPU via Settings → Display → Graphics.
Steam Deck / Linux
On Steam Deck or Linux/SteamOS, update Proton (Proton Experimental or the latest stable) and verify the game files after every update. Note: official patch notes target Steam, so treat Steam Deck steps as general guidance rather than an official platform promise.
Test mods in a clean state
If you use mods, reproduce the problem with all mods disabled first. Re-enable them one by one to find the conflict, and confirm each mod has a 1.0-compatible update.
Back up your save first
Before changing drivers, Proton or game files, back up your save so a failed update never costs you progress.
Report it to the developers
If the issue survives all of the above, report it through the official Steam discussions with your version, platform, GPU and reproduction steps. The team has been shipping performance fixes in recent patches.
